Hey all, I'm sad to say that internet trends have pressured me into moving my work to Tumblr. I've succumbed to peer pressure and have picked up some additional social trends including smoking, drinking black coffee, having an iPhone family plan, listening to Jay-Z, and wearing Ugg boots. I may be a follower, but I ask you to continue following me at my new home.

Wreck-It Ralph

So D23 was last weekend in Anaheim. I didn't get a chance to go, but to my surprise, Disney Feature had created an amazing display with work of mine for the upcoming feature, "Wreck-It Ralph". I figured since images and footage has now been leaking, I can share with you a few things. Before moving onto "Gravity Falls" last year, I had an amazing opportunity to help develop the world, look and game-play surrounding the main characters of "Wreck-It Ralph". It was an incredibly unique challenge that pushed me away from animation and into pseudo game developing. It was an incredibly fun challenge to create the gameplay and look of an 8-bit game that could easily fit right into 1982-83 arcade games like "Donkey Kong", "Pacman", and "Galaga". I did lots of research that I won't bore you with, but really tried to stay true to the technological limitations in color palate, pixel count and dimension to those of it's predecessors. While working on it, I developed a huge respect for the designers of classic limited games. It made me want to take classic 8-bit Mario and hang him next to a Michelangelo. Shigeru Miyamoto is a true master of design and made me really re-think design in terms of how little you need to show to communicate an idea, but also how each individual pixel's placement could make a huge difference in clarity. It was also fun to do some development for the graphics for the arcade cabinet itself. I really wanted to stay true to the slightly wonky Japanese graphics like the ones on the classic Donkey Kong Cabinet and have the character designs intentionally off-model as though the art direction was communicated over a long distance call to a Japanese artist. It looks like they did a really great job with the graphics used on the machine and I was stoked to see this a real tangible game. Kudos to the Ralph crew! I can't post much yet, but will post all of my development work once the movie is released. In the mean time, here's a pic of the exterior cabinet and video footage of the game play.

Greetings from Gravity Falls!

I'm very happy to have my first post sharing some of my work from Disney Channel's "Gravity Falls". I've been working on the show now for roughly nine months as Character Designer and I couldn't be more pleased to share some early promo material. These postcards were made for handouts at Comic Con. Ian Worrel, Phil Rynda, and I did the artwork for them. I also sacrificed a piece of my hair for this darn thing.
For those who are curious, "Gravity Falls" is a comedy about twins Dipper and Mabel Pines who are thrown into the mysterious town of Gravity Falls, Oregon for the summer when their parents send them to stay with their Great Uncle Stan (aka “Grunkle Stan”).
In Gravity Falls, Stan is in charge of running The Mystery Shack, which is a tourist destination that overcharges unlucky visitors for a glimpse at the world’s most bizarre museum. But Dipper and Mabel soon realize that there is something strange going on and they must work together to find out what it is! ( I actually just copied and pasted this description from a Disney Channel article because I don't know what I can officially say ) HA!

Anyways, this is my first post of many to come in the near future. Hope you all check it out next Summer!

Here's some of my development designs for a new character in the new Winnie the Pooh movie called "The Backson". I explored a few different techniques in the realm of children's chalk drawings. Eric Goldberg supervised the sequence and gave him a new design, but here's some of my work. It was an honor being able to design a new character along side of such wonderful, warm, and charming characters. The art of book is now out at bookstores and the movie is out this Friday. Viva 2D!

I drew this when I was bored and trying to get used to my tiny Cintiq after a year of neglect. By the way, if you're planning on getting a Cintiq, don't buy the 12WX. It suuuucks having to draw so small. Boooo! Gross! Get it away!

Fresh Start!

It's time for a fresh start!
I've been out of the blogging loop for over a year now and now it's time to get back in the groove. A lot has happened. After designing on some upcoming Disney movies, I left Disney feature and transferred over to Disney TV Animation to work on my friend, Alex Hirsch's new show, "Gravity Falls". I've been over there as a character designer for the show for around three months now. TV is a new and exciting set of challenges. Hopefully as the show comes out, I can post up some of the work I will have done, but in the mean time, I've been trying to make an effort to start drawing for myself again. Please feel free to nag me if I haven't updated for a while, because I don't want to fall back in that complacent and lazy state. Anyways, thanks for checking out my work!
